In Tanzania, as a student, I was given opportunities rarely found in Belgium: conducting real consultations, independently assisting with deliveries, and being part of a team. Resources were limited, but the care and dedication of the staff were impressive. This internship has made me look at medicine — and the world — in a different way. An experience that will shape me permanently, as a future doctor and as a person.

In Mwanzugi (Tanzania), as a student, you get the chance to participate in the growing Father Bolle Health Center. You will gain hands-on experience in areas such as maternity, pediatrics, infectious diseases, HIV and tuberculosis care, mother & child care, outreach screening for cervical cancer, and more. With daily deliveries, an operating theater, and additional new expansions, this is a unique place to learn. Swahili and the many languages of the various tribes posed a challenge, but you quickly pick up some vocabulary. Fortunately, the Sisters spoke good English ;-).
We were warmly welcomed and stayed with the Sisters, who immerse you in local life. Sister Clara took us under her wing, showing us the ins and outs of the Health Center. She is a woman who has since become very dear to my heart. What began as a leap into the unknown grew into an unforgettable, enriching experience for life!
